Legal “Rights” Granted to “Gaia”

…or, maybe Strip Mining turns Gaia on…

The village of Yellow Springs in Ohio has just become the most recent jurisdiction to grant “rights” to the Earth.  No, not the band, but to the entire planet, or to be more accurate, to Gaia herself.  This appears to be prompted by the “rape” of Gaia that would happen if fracking were allowed.

Anyone ever thought that Gaia might like a good fracking now and then?

Yellow Springs follows in the steps of the People’s Republic of Santa Monica, which had earlier recognized “the rights of people, natural communities, and ecosystems to exist, regenerate and flourish.”

Probably the biggest city in the U. S. to consider such lunacy was the City of Los Angeles itself, whose city council tried to add a “Pledge to the Earth” which would have been required to be recited after the “Pledge of Allegience to the Flag.”  The pledge went:

“I pledge allegiance to the Earth on which I stand, one world, one people, undivided, with food, shelter and justice for all.”

Of course, this twig-worshipping granting of rights to Gaia is not limited to the lunatic leftist fringe in America.

Bolivia, led by the outspoken leftist tyrant Evo Morales, has passed “La Ley de Derechos de la Madre Tierra” (Law of Mother Earth), which declared that Gaia, among other things, has “the right to life and to exist; the right to continue vital cycles and processes free from human alteration; the right to pure water and clean air; the right to balance; the right not to be polluted; and the right to not have cellular structure modified or genetically altered.”

The response of any sane person can be summed up by the following statement by that great industrialist C. Montgomery Burns:

“Oh, so Mother Nature needs a favor? Well, maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival and now she wants to quit because she’s losing? Well, I say, hard cheese!”
— C. Montgomery Burns

Not wanting to limit his reign of idiocy to Bolivia, Morales has been pushing for the United Nations to adopt a treaty to prevent mankind (no, not that mankind… this mankind) from being naughty to Mother Earth.

Has anyone considered that Mother Earth likes it naughty?

While this may all seem laughable, there is a truly chilling undercurrent going on here.  Most of the Progressives in America, in addition to the vast majority of international leadership, believe that “rights” are a grant from government.

They conflate inherent God-given rights that exist independent of the state, such as freedom of speech and of self-defense, with handouts and promised goodies like welfare.  From their point of view, “rights” are handed out from above high and become a dispensation of government.  The government must then “balance” these rights after deciding what “grants” these “rights consist of.  When it gets to that point, any declaration of rights, from the U.N. Declaration of Human Rights to the Constitution of South Africa, become not only a fraud, but a sick joke that declares the right of the state to abrogate TRUE inherent God-given rights.

When “Rights of the Earth” are thrown in, they don’t even have to pretend to have to balance “rights” between humans… they now have a false god with which they can demand sacrifices from the mass of serfs/slaves.
