Gun Rights

Knife Rights’ bills filed in Texas and West Virginia
With the start of the 2017 legislative sessions in the various states comes a flurry of press activity from Knife Rights. We have been reporting on efforts in the legislatures of Georgia, Virginia, and New York, and today comes word that West Virginia and Texas are also in their figurative cross hairs. They have introduced a preemption bill in the former, and in the latter they seek to right one of the greatest ironic injustices in the country – namely the fact that it is illegal to carry a Bowie Knife (and a few other styles of blade) in the Great State of Texas.

Pres. Trump Chooses Science Advisor
I’ve been waiting to find out who will be Pres. Trump’s science adviser. It appears to be physicist Dr. William Happer, a physicist currently teaching at Princeont University, and former Director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science from 1991–1993. He’s no slouch as a scientist. His work for the Air Force on the sodium guidestar laser platform for the military’s missile defense program provided information on the tropopause layer in the upper atmosphere, which is where atmospheric wave fronts distort both starlight and laser emissions, and where heat either begins to leak into space or does not, depending on how much and what kind of gas is blocking heat radiation.

Meet “Cheyenne”, the coal-powered climate predicting supercomputer
There’s been some buzz in the last week as it was announced that NCAR’s new climate supercomputer was finally online.

The Climate “Deus ex Machina” is shown to be a false God
Some say that “God” might reside in a computer…the Deus ex Machina, literally means “god from the machine”. Amongst those individuals are those divining climate with climate computers in which are embedded general circulation models. This has generated a belief system…belief that all variables which drive global climate at all time scales have been identified, quantified as to individual contribution and interactions, and that chaotic variability is foreseeable. At the current state of scientific knowledge, such belief is intellectual hubris masquerading as achieved scientific endeavor.

Shale Is Reshaping America’s Oil Trade Balance
America’s crude trade balance is changing. On the import front, the decision by petrostates to cut production (with the intention of erasing a global oil glut to help induce a price rebound) is expected to reduce the amount of oil the U.S. buys from Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Those OPEC members have been constraining output since the beginning of the year, but because it takes roughly six weeks to ship crude from the Middle East to the Americas, we haven’t yet started to see a reduction in supplies from the region.

Still facing an uphill battle in the coming elections, French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen continued to make news this week with a trip to Lebanon where she sought to shore up her foreign-policy bona fides. After meeting with her first head of state and other influential figures, Le Pen was apparently informed that a scheduled meeting with the Grand Mufti would require her to don some sort of scarf or other head covering in accordance with Muslim traditions. True to form, Le Pen’s response was rather brief, amounting to little more than, “send him my best.”

The Turkish people may have finally noticed that their president is becoming a tyrant
I get tired of writing about horrible things happening in Turkey and the tragic decay of democracy in a once thriving and recently revitalized nation. That’s why it is with guarded optimism that I was pleased to read what might be some of the first good news coming out of that country in over a year. President Erdogan has nearly completed his months long march to vastly expand the powers of the presidency and cement his position as potential tyrant for life, but there was one step left to go. In April there will be a public referendum where the voters will have to approve his bid for ultimate power.

The ethical quandaries of genetic editing
I’ve been doing a lot of reading over the last year on the subject of genetic engineering, particularly in light of the advent of CRISPR technology. If you haven’t heard of that yet you might want to look into it. It’s an amazing scientific advancement which allows scientists to go in and conduct some surgical stitching of the genetic code which defines the physical makeup of all living things. While that sounds tremendously exciting, it’s also pretty darned frightening when you stop to think about it. Potential advancements in medical technology aside, there are also a number of ethical and even religious questions which become immediately tangled up in the debate. Christine Emba published an excellent article on the subject at the Washington Post this week.

Right to try, right to buy, right to test
Each year, 2,000 to 3,000 individuals with leukemia and other forms of bone marrow disease die while waiting to receive another person’s bone marrow cells. It’s not that strangers are indifferent to their plight, but that suitable biological matches are hard to find. And even when a match is found, there is a 1-in-2 chance that the needle-in-a-haystack donor either can’t be located by registry personnel or, incomprehensibly, refuses to donate even though he had earlier volunteered to be tested.

Why Are Some Conservatives Still Defending the Abhorrent Milo Yiannopoulos?
Milo Yiannopoulos is neither a free speech martyr nor a conservative. Rather, he is a flamboyant and provocative troll. Ross Douthat accurately describes him this way.

How Trump Could Spark a New GOP Split – or Maybe a Love Fest
Republicans, populists, and conservatives have not had it this good in at least a decade, and perhaps not ever – collectively, at least. Populists lifted Donald Trump to the presidency, while Republicans and conservatives continued an eight-year crescendo in majorities in the House, Senate, state legislatures, and gubernatorial seats. The Grand Old Party has its best opportunity since perhaps Reconstruction to remake government from the federal level all the way down to the counties and cities, while at the same time clear the regulatory decks for economic expansion.

Straightforward From Here To The Left’s Fascist, Maybe Violent, Endgame
The Democrat Party, its Media serfs, and Social Justice Incorporated are all outraged because we uppity normals are again presuming to rule ourselves, and their agony is delightful. Less delightful is how, in the process of trying to claw their way back into power, they are incinerating the norms and rules that preserve our political order. That stuff Hillary babbled about honoring the legitimacy of elections? Yeah, no. There’s an invisible asterisk only liberals can see that explains that the norms and rules are void when liberals lose.

Manufactured Rage
During the Constitutional Convention of 1787 there was debate over the final form of the legislature. Anyone with an iota of knowledge of those debates knows that they decided on a bicameral legislature with the big states (at that time)- Pennsylvania, Virginia and Massachusetts- getting their way with representation based on population and the small states getting their way with equal representation in the Senate.
