The Physics Department at the University of Chicago invited undergraduate applicants to a “Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)” complete with a $6000 stipend. But the announcement made it clear that Asian and White men are not who this program was “particularly intended” for and specifically offers “undergraduates (members of underrepresented minority groups (African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans) and women) the opportunity to gain research experience”.
This is in violation of the University’s own rule against racial discrimination.
Apparently the light shined on them by Christopher Rufo, has gotten them to change the wording… not to ensure that it is racially neutral, but to obfuscate their intent by changing the wording to “[t]he program is open to all and we encourage applications from those underrepresented in physics.”
They aren’t sorry for what they did. They are sorry for being caught.
