Firing Line Friday: The Mechanism of Moral Development

     In the hopes of encouraging a more civil, and illuminating, discourse, here is another episode of William F. Buckley, Jr.’s “Firing Line”.

     Increasingly, many see morality being totally abandoned. Half a century ago, when morality was also slipping down that slope, the question of moral development was discussed by William F. Buckley, Jr. with B.F. Skinner, Andrea Glass, Leon Festinger, Harvey Grill, and Elisabeth Clark, all of whom investigate the mechanism of moral development.

Quick Takes – Academic Madness: Woke Janitors; “Power, Inequity, and Justice”; “Abolish the Family”

     Another “quick takes” on items where there is too little to say to make a complete article, but is still important enough to comment on.

     The focus this time: Clean-up in aisle “woke”.

     First, a little mood music:

     Carrying on…

     The proletariat must be made to embrace the woke revolution by their elitist superiors!

“Job listings on Eastern Washington University’s (EWU) ‘Employment Opportunities’ website appear to require applicants to get on board with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion ideology as a condition of employment, from custodian to associate dean.

“Each job requires the applicant to write a ‘Diversity Response’ describing how they will ‘apply an approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.’

“‘[W]e are interested in how your qualifications prepare you to work with diverse faculty, staff, and student populations representing various cultures and backgrounds that may be different from your own,’ each job description reads.

“A ‘Tribal Land Acknowledgement’ is also featured with every job posting.”

They Fear The Traditional Nuclear Family

     Apparently, believing that it is best for children to grow up in a household with a mother and father dedicated to each other and their children is… “un-American”. At least is it according to South Dakota state Representative Erin Healy.

     They hate the nuclear family. A man and woman getting married and raising their children in a loving home means the family will be at the center of society… not the government.

     We’ve known for a long time now that those on the Left believe that Leviathan (i.e. the state) is the true and proper parent, and not cis-heteronormative couples. But in this tweet, they are admitting that they see the traditional nuclear family is a threat to “it takes a villiage” socialization of child-rearing. It means that families and even communities can stand on their own two feet and not only deny the government the totalitarian power it craves, but that they could even oppose what the Nomenklatura believe is best for the hoi polloi.

University Of Chicago: Everyone Encouraged To Apply (Except For White And Asian Men)

     The Physics Department at the University of Chicago invited undergraduate applicants to a “Summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU)” complete with a $6000 stipend.   But the announcement made it clear that Asian and White men are not who this program was “particularly intended” for and specifically offers “undergraduates (members of underrepresented minority groups (African-Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans) and women) the opportunity to gain research experience”.

     This is in violation of the University’s own rule against racial discrimination.

     Apparently the light shined on them by Christopher Rufo, has gotten them to change the wording… not to ensure that it is racially neutral, but to obfuscate their intent by changing the wording to “[t]he program is open to all and we encourage applications from those underrepresented in physics.”

Fighting Wokeness With Nondiscrimination In West Virginia

     West Virginia has previously introduced legislation to stop the implementation of Critical Race Theory. Now, they are aiming to ban “DEI” bureaucracy along with the ills of requiring “diversity training”. HB 3505 bands “Offices of diversity, equity, and inclusion”:

“(A) Diversity, equity, and inclusion offices and officers often engage in differential attention to, treatment of, or provision of special benefits to individuals on the basis of race, color, or ethnicity, or of sex, thereby violating civil rights laws and putting their institutions at risk of losing federal funding; and

“(B) It is the policy of the state that the administrations of public institutions of higher education, and their administrative units, be officially neutral with regard to widely contested opinions in the state regarding unconscious or implicit bias, cultural appropriation, identity group allyship, transgender ideology, microaggressions, group marginalization, anti-racism, systemic oppression, social justice, intersectionality, neo-pronouns, heteronormativity, gender theory, racial or sexual privilege, critical race theory, and any related formulation of these concepts.”

Firing Line Friday: What to Do about the Post Office

     In the hopes of encouraging a more civil, and illuminating, discourse, here is another episode of William F. Buckley, Jr.’s “Firing Line”.

     The scope and monopoly of government services, as well as the extent of welfare, has been debated for a century or so. Even half a century ago, when William F. Buckley, Jr. debated Sen. Ernest F. Hollings concerning these question including what to do about the post office.

     Until next Friday.

Biden’s Praxis

     In 2021, President Biden rescinded the ban on “diversity and sensitivity” training that instituted racial divisiveness and discrimination, i.e. implemented “praxis”, via Executive Order. Now, he has promulgated an Executive Order that requires the implementation of “equity”. “Equity”, to remind you dear reader, does not mean equality of outcomes, but countering the thesis of White/Male/&c. “privilege” by an equal and opposite antithesis of discrimination against the “privileged” in order to achieve the equality in all things that is the synthesis of their eschaton that this Executive Order is designed to immanentize.

     This executive order requires all agencies and departments to form “Agency Equity Teams” and to submit “Agency Equity Teams” to provide the praxis of their reinvisioning of America into some woke utopia. But it goes farther than that. This praxis is intersectional with includion of Gender and Environmental Justice, and tosses in an obsession with Urban living specifically.

     “Affirmatively Advancing” Civil Rights requirement is reminiscent of Obama’s “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing” plan. In Obama’s housing scheme, he sought to re-engineer all aspects of American housing and neighborhoods. It is clear that Biden seeks to re-engineer all aspects of American society. It is social engineering sub rosa and without even an enabling act!

Utah vs. Diversity Statements

      Universities and colleges are increasingly requiring “diversity statements” which serve as pledges to wokeness and praxis. Now, Utah may end up stepping up to the plate and start swinging back by banning any such “diversity statements” for not only higher education, but K-12, procurement by the state, and government employees. HB 541 says, in part:

(1) (a) As used in this section, “prohibited submission” means a submission, statement, or document that requires a person to articulate or demonstrate the person’s position on a policy or initiative regarding, or other consideration of, race, color, ethnicity, sex, national origin, or age.

(b) “Prohibited submission” includes a submission, statement, or document that relates to a policy, program, or initiative regarding:

(i) diversity, equity, and inclusion;

(ii) anti-racism;

(iii) implicit bias; or

(iv) critical race theory.

(2) An institution may not request a prohibited submission to take action with respect to:

(a) employment, including decisions regarding:

(i) hiring;

(ii) terms of employment;

(iii) benefits;

(iv) seniority status;

(v) tenure;

(vi) promotion;

(vii) transfer; or

(viii) appointment;

(b) admissions and aid, including:

(i) admission to any program, club, or course;

(ii) financial or other forms of aid or assistance; or

(iii) other benefits from the institution for which a person is eligible; or

(c) degree requirements, including:

(i) requirements to obtain credits; or

(ii) requirements for graduation.

(3) An institution may not grant any form of preferential consideration to a person who, without solicitation from the institution, provides a prohibited submission for consideration for any action described in Subsection (2).

      Wokeness should have no place in government and public institutions, which ought to be for all and not a tool of the few to cudgel the rest.

California To Banks: Stop Doing Business With Gun Manufacturers… Or Else!

     Operation Choke Point was a secret government scheme to dissuade banks from working with, amongst others, firearm related businesses. It was a scandal at the time and ended after four years. Now, there is a draft law being openly proposed to ban banks from doing business with California unless those banks refuse to do business with gun manufacturers! The legislative counsel’s digest of SB-637 says, in part:

“Existing law prohibits certain state trust funds from making or holding investments in business firms or financial institutions that engage in specified discriminatory business practices.

“This bill would state the intent of the Legislature to subsequently amend this bill to include provisions that would prohibit financial institutions that do business with gun manufacturers from doing business with the state of California.”

     But what does the bill actually say?

“The people of the State of California do enact as follows:

“SECTION 1. It is the intent of the Legislature to subsequently amend this measure to include provisions that would prohibit financial institutions that do business with firearms manufacturers from doing business with the state of California.”

     You know it’s bad when they need to keep the details secret until the last moment!
