Quick Takes – Woke Schools vs. Parents: Legally Hiding Transgendering From Parents; Affinity Groups For BIPOC Parents Only; Private Organizations In Canada Siding Against Parents

Another “quick takes” on items where there is too little to say to make a complete article, but is still important enough to comment on.

The focus this time: Schools love parents just as long as you’re the type of parent they love.

     First, a little mood music:

     Carrying on…

Sometimes, state supreme courts rule against parents and for the government.

“A policy that allows school staff to keep a child’s transgender status a secret does not violate a parent’s fundamental rights under the New Hampshire constitution, the state’s Supreme Court has held.

“The policy was challenged by a New Hampshire mother who sued the Manchester school district after finding out from a teacher that her minor child (identified as M.C.) had asked school staff and students to be called by a name typically associated with the opposite sex.”

“…

“And while the school justifies its policy based on principles of ‘safety’ and ‘inclusion,’ such secret social transitioning—starting with using their preferred names and pronouns—puts the child on the path to permanent, life-altering medical transitioning. All without the parents’ knowledge, much less consent.

“The court zoomed past these thorny issues to conclude there’s no ‘constitutional dimension’ to any interference with parental rights resulting from the school’s non-disclosure policy, compared to those implicated by parental custody and termination cases. And it read the lower court’s order to find—without any explanation as to how—that the policy survives both the facial and ‘as applied’ constitutional challenges under the more lenient rational basis review.”

Segregation is schools is all the rage again, this time being embraced by Leftists.

“The effort of a public school in New York to build an antibias, anti-racist community includes implementing what appears to be a BIPOC-exclusive affinity group, according to a school-wide email provided to National Review by advocacy group Defending Education.

“Battery Park City School advertises a ‘BIPOC/Person of the Global Majority Parent/Caregiver Affinity Group’ to families who are interested ‘in engaging in [anti-racist] work and identify as a Black, Indigenous or Person of Color/Person of the Global Majority,’ according to a sign-up form for the group.

“In December, administrators sent an email that invited ‘Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (POC) families to join a conversation’ as part of its goal to create an anti-racist school community.”

“‘This school decided it was a good idea to create a group for parents and caregivers to discus to join but to limit participation to people of a certain race or skin color,’ the senior director of communications for Defending Education, Erika Sanzi, said. ‘The best part? They are describing it as a space to discuss bias and hate that will help to build a positive culture.’”

In Canada, when the schools don’t like what the parents want to do, they find substitutes for the parents to argue on their behalf.

“Julie began identifying privately as non-binary in 2021, at the start of Grade 5. She came out to her class at the beginning of 2022.

“With the help of a teacher in York Catholic District School Board (YCDSB), her parents were kept in the dark about her use of ‘they/them’ pronouns and a new masculinized name in the classroom. Only in June 2022 did her parents learn what was quietly going on in school. When they objected and asked school leaders to include them in conversations about their daughter, the school called the Children’s Aid Society (CAS), which investigated the family.

“In December 2023, Julie detransitioned after realizing she’d been swept up in a social fad that overlooked her underlying mental health issues. Now, her family is raising the alarm about the power schools have to keep parents in the dark.”
