Quick Takes – Who’s Being Euthanized Now? Autistic Teens; Toddlers; Preventable Suicides

Another “quick takes” on items where there is too little to say to make a complete article, but is still important enough to comment on.

The focus this time: Is there anyone they won’t kill?

     First, a little mood music:

     Carrying on…

     Meanwhile, in the Netherlands…

“Four-and-a-half years after he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, a Dutch teen was euthanized at his request.

“The boy, aged between 16 and 18, had described his life as ‘joyless.’ He’d struggled with anxiety and mood-related problems, and where he fit in, in the world. Oversensitive to stimuli, ‘every day was an ordeal he had to get through,’ according to the latest annual report from the Netherlands’ regional euthanasia death review committees. ‘In the final weeks before his death, he lay in bed the whole time.’”

Now, the Netherlands is killing toddlers.

“A TWO-YEAR-OLD child has been euthanised after the Dutch government cut its age limit for assisted dying.

“The toddler was nearly 24 months old and suffering from severe medical conditions, a review board in the Netherlands revealed.

“…

“Born prematurely at 26 weeks, the toddler suffered severe brain damage, cerebral palsy and visual impairment.

“The gender of the toddler was not released.”

Suicide is bad, unless a doctor says otherwise…

“You may not have heard, but today is the annual World Suicide Prevention Day. Usually, such efforts are almost invisible. We don’t put nearly as much emphasis on suicide prevention as we once did.

“I am all for suicide prevention, of course. I just wish that those efforts included assisted suicide/euthanasia, which costs the lives of approximately 25,000 people annually around the world — with that toll increasing every year. But despite proliferating laws allowing doctors and nurse practitioners to assisted suicides — or, as in Canada, Netherlands, Belgium, New Zealand, and other countries — actively kill suicidal people, prevention efforts are generally silent about this category of suicide.”
