The Unlibertarian Libertarians

One would expect, out of all the major and minor parties in the United States of America, that the Libertarian Party would be the one that would support businesses in their right to refuse service if they find such service to be morally repugnant, based on the idea that the state shouldn’t coerce people as such.

One, however, would be wrong.  Turns out Gary Johnson has a bit of a Statist streak, as Benny Huang over at Freedom Daily notes:

“If you’re like me you’re probably searching for a third party candidate in the wake of Donald Trump’s clinching of the GOP nomination. For those of you considering the Libertarian Party (LP), I hope you’ll reconsider.

“The party’s current frontrunner, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson, doesn’t seem to understand this liberty thing. He thinks it means drugs and abortion but should you decide that you don’t want to engage in a business transaction he wants the government to coerce you. The party’s other candidates aren’t quite as extreme in their statism though none of them will make an unqualified stand for your Thirteenth Amendment right not to be held in involuntary servitude—which is exactly what private sector nondiscrimination laws are.

“Johnson is so enamored with the concept of private sector nondiscrimination laws that he wants to force Jewish bakers to make a Nazi wedding cakes. Yes, really. Contrary to the battle cry of his party, ‘Minimum government, maximum freedom,’ Johnson thinks the government should mandate that party A do business with party B. I don’t. My philosophy is that both ends of any economic transaction should be voluntary. That is not, by the way, a return to Jim Crow. Jim Crow was also a statist monstrosity which prohibited businesses from serving whom they wished. Big difference.”

While Mr. Huang is making a salient point about the Libertarian Parties hypocrisy, it also misses another point: There is a difference between refusing to sell some standard widget to someone just because of their race; and refusing to participate or personal creative abilities to promote and endorse a moral message.

That former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson has gone so far as to state that the government may void your free speech rights, just so that someone else can get what they want, is just proof that many “libertarians” are libertines who only care about getting what they can get.

It also demonstrates that the “right” of a customer to get whatever they want requires that the business, and the people who work for it, to surrender all moral agency and just follow orders, as is the case with the city of New York forcing bars and bartenders to serve pregnant women a drink.

There are probably some libertarians who would have volunteered in the Khmer Rouge because their leader’s name was “Pol Pot”…

To a large degree, this is the end result of John Stewart Mills’ opinions on the squares who wanted to harsh his mellow.  Libertines want not only the right to do what they want, but the “right” to compel you to do so.

Mills whined about the “inclination to stretch unduly the powers of society over the individual, both by the force of opinion and even by that of legislation.”*  He was, in fact, complaining not just about coercion by the state, but by the opinion of society in effect “harshing his mellow.”

The irony here is that Gov. Johnson is endorsing using the “powers of society over the individual” via “coercion by the state.

Libertarians have become what they ostensibly declare they hate.

Brazilian Impeachment Shenanigans

Right in time for the 2016 Summer Olympics, Brazil is ready to display to the world just how corrupt and messed up its government is (with bonus Zika and hookers)!

The Speaker of the Brazilian House, Eduardo Cunha , who led the charge against of impeachment of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in the lower house, was himself suspended by the Brazilian Supreme Court from his position.

Why would they do such a thing?  Because the acting leader of the House decided to unilaterally reject the overwhelming vote of the body!

“[Brazil’s Acting House President] Waldir Maranhão alleges that the chamber’s previous vote against Ms. Rousseff was flawed; Senate president dismisses move as ‘joke'”

Of course, the Brazilian Senate is taking a hard line with a hefty “f**k you” to this move:

“Senate leaders vowed to defy the decision on Monday, promising to decide the president’s fate this week anyway. Lawmakers on both sides of the issue said they would rush to the Supreme Court, hoping for an answer on whether the impeachment proceedings would move forward as planned.”

And the Senate impeached Rousseff, automatically causing the suspension of her Presidency, with the Vice-President taking over for not-more than six months, pending a full trial and potential removal of Rousseff.

“Trans”-ing Education

Not to be satisfied with suing North Carolina to force them to let men use the girl’s restrooms, the Obama administration has issued mandatory “guidance” that declares a right to separate facilities based on sex (via Title IX) to now prohibit separate facilities based on sex and mandating that one’s “gender identity” means what biological sex means, even though they have been legally different for quite some time now, though perhaps not for long:

     The Doublethink is strong here:

“Under Title IX, a school must treat students consistent with their gender identity even if their education records or identification documents indicate a different sex. The Departments have resolved Title IX investigations with agreements committing that school staff and contractors will use pronouns and names consistent with a transgender student’s gender identity.

“…

“Title IX’s implementing regulations permit a school to provide sex-segregated restrooms, locker rooms, shower facilities, housing, and athletic teams, as well as single-sex classes under certain circumstances…When a school provides sex-segregated activities and facilities, transgender students must be allowed to participate in such activities and access such facilities consistent with their gender identity… Restrooms and Locker Rooms. A school may provide separate facilities on the basis of sex, but must allow transgender students access to such facilities consistent with their gender identity.14 A school may not require transgender students to use facilities inconsistent with their gender identity or to use individual-user facilities when other students are not required to do so. A school may, however, make individual-user options available to all students who voluntarily seek additional privacy.”

The Administration even goes so far as to deny a biological basis of sex by referring to one’s “Sex assigned at birth”:

“Sex assigned at birth refers to the sex designation recorded on an infant’s birth certificate should such a record be provided at birth”.

This conflation of “gender” and “biological sex”, terms that were made to refer to different things in order for a biological male to be a little girl, is part of the Left’s plan to abolish any biological distinction between males and females, and relegate such differences to something akin to a difference in the size of one’s ears:

“Once upon a time, the word ‘gender’ just meant ‘biological sex’. Then, looney tunes such as John Money had the bizarre idea that gender is just a ‘social construct’. However, because the obvious truth between a person’s legs could not be denied, the idea that ‘gender’ and ‘biological sex’ became two different things.

“However, now that biological sex is itself being declared a social construct, the definitional distinction between ‘gender’ and ‘biological sex’ is no longer useful. Now, it would seem, those two terms will once again mean the same things, and that same thing is one of those ‘social constructs.'”

Cultural Marxism, The Academic Cult

Ever doubt that Marxism applied to race, gender, sexuality, &c. (i.e. Cultural Marxism) is real?  Ever believe that colleges are where people are exposed to a variety of different ideas?

If ever, than you’d be wrong.

Cultural Marxism, and its handmaiden “Social Justice”, is becoming increasingly open about being Marxist, including outright “borrowing” from the Communist Manifesto, and the kids are kept in line with good-old fashioned cultish brainwashing:

How NOT To Teach Democracy In Schools

The Left love to champion “democracy” and use it as an excuse to shove people into a voting booth like it is a clown car, because it is advantageous to them… until it is not.  Venezuelan President Maduro has threatened to threaten Venezuela’s legislature for daring to oppose his so-called socialist paradise… but at least he’s not picking on kids like San Francisco schools are hell bent on doing.

“An attempt to engineer diversity in student government at a public high school in San Francisco has drawn scrutiny from parents who claim faculty tried to replace an appointed student leader with another student because of his Latino last name.

“For the first time, administrators at Raoul Wallenberg High School decided last September to forgo the democratic process in student elections and appoint members of the freshman class to most of the seats on the student council. The freshman president and all student leaders for other grade levels were still elected.

“Part of the reasoning behind the change was to ‘encourage more diversity in our student leadership,’ according to Principal Cheryl Foster, who responded to questions from the San Francisco Examiner through a district spokesperson.”

Of course “diversity” means different things.  Typically for the Left, it means less White people, but it would seem that Asian students are now not “diverse” enough:

“The majority of students at Wallenberg — 53 percent — in the 2014-15 school year were Asian, according to the district.”

Quick Takes – Government In The Dorm; Government In The Bedroom; Government In the Dungeon

Another “quick takes” on items where there is too little to say to make a complete article, but is still important enough to comment on.

The focus this time: The Religious Right were amateurs!

     First, a little mood music:

     Carrying on…

It has been noted that the Progressive Left have proven to be liars and hypocrites when it comes to privacy in sexual matters.  Now, Connecticut is jumping in on the “Yes means yes” bandwagon and the presumption that all men are rapists until proven, or even if proven, innocent:

“The latest: Connecticut legislators have recently taken up again the fight to make the Constitution State adopt an affirmative consent policy for college campuses. An effort last year to establish this policy was unsuccessful; if it works this year, Connecticut will be the third state in the country to adopt this rule for college students. The Hartford Courant explains:

“‘The concept, known as “affirmative consent,” shifts the burden of proof in disciplinary cases from victim to perpetrator. Instead of requiring a victim to prove that she or he said no to sexual contact, the policy requires a school’s disciplinary board to determine whether there was an unambiguous and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity. If not, a student could be expelled or subject to another punishment.

“‘Such policies “create a safer campus environment for students to come forward after an assault,” said Maddie Granato, a policy associate with the Connecticut Women’s Education and Legal Fund.’

“What is currently taking place is nothing short of a revolution in the meaning of rape, consent, and due process of law. Though it’s currently confined to campuses, don’t expect this movement to stay that way. After all, it doesn’t make sense for state legislatures to mandate one definition of sexual assault for 22 year-old college students and another for 22 year-olds who are out in the workforce. There have already been some discussion of applying standards like “yes means yes” outside of the campus context, and we fully expect efforts to do so to get more aggressive if and when the campus takeover becomes complete.”

Free Range Children and The Nanny State

While there is much to be said about “helicopter” parents and the effect they have on their children who never learn to become functioning independent adults, a greater risk is the punishment of those parents who allow their children even an iota of independence by the Nanny state.

Oft referred to as “free range” parents, these parents have been increasingly punished for incrementally more narrowly defined “neglect”.  How narrow?  Children playing in their own fenced-in backyard with a parent keeping an eye on them from within their house.

“A Winnipeg woman says she was reported to and investigated by Child and Family Services simply for letting her children play in her backyard.

“Jacqui Kendrick, a stay-at-home mom, says a CFS worker showed up unexpectedly in early April, saying they had received a complaint about her children being unsupervised.

“Kendrick has three children ages two, five and 10, and says they often played in her fenced-in backyard after school.

“Kendrick says she’s either with them or watching them from her living room, though she says her oldest child also helps out by looking after her younger siblings.

“But she says because a file has been created, she’s worried that any future complaints could end up with her children being taken from her.”

This isn’t leaving a toddler alone for a week in a rat infested house.  This is not neglect.  The mother checked in periodically, and the older child looked after the younger child.  This is what used to be known as “growing up” where kids learned to be responsible and become a fully functional and independent adult.  That is probably why the Left and the Nanny State seem more than happy to punish “free range” families: The more “free range” kids who learn to be fully functioning and responsible, independent adults, the fewer dependent special little snowflakes who seek out belonging and to be taken care of by a substitute parent—be they college administrators or Leviathan itself.

Begun, The Bathroom Wars Have

North Carolina has declared that men’s restrooms are for men, and women’s restrooms are for women.  This would have elicited nothing more than a “well obviously” from people in the past.  But we are experiencing “interesting times”, where “men” and “women” are defined not by objective biological reality, but by the “feelz” of a scant few who wish to force their “identities” on others… regardless of the cost.  Needless to say, the outrage that real men are supposed to use the men’s room and not the ladies’ room has been palpable and hypocritical.

Virtue-signaling hypocrite Bruce Springsteen is one example of this insanity.  He canceled a concert in North Carolina because men weren’t allowed into the ladies’ restroom.  This was so beyond the pale for him, that he had to make a moral stand; this makes it clear that he thinks that prosecuting, in the most vicious way, Gay people is totes OK, since he was happy to play in Dubai where these things tend to happen!  Bryan Adams was another virtue-signaling hypocrite who boycotted Mississippi for the same reason, and with the same hypocrisy played a concert in Egypt.  Of course for them, it’s all about the filthy lucre when they are not busy virtue-signaling… in order to get some more of that filthy, filthy lucre.

In response to this outswelling of support for men in ladies’ restroom, the city of Charlotte has illegally passed an ordinance which outlaws all sex-specific bathrooms and showers (or any other facility)!

“Any biological man – regardless of whether he ‘identifies’ or ‘expresses’ himself as a man OR as a woman – now has the legal right under the City’s amended ordinance to access the most intimate of women’s facilities (and vice versa). Under the ordinance, Charlotte businesses may no longer offer or enforce sex-specific facilities and face penalties if they do.

Before the amendment, the public accommodations ordinance had two separate parts.

“The first part prohibited denying anyone ‘the full and equal enjoyment of the … facilities … a place of public accommodation because of race, color, religion, or national origin.’

“The second part prohibited discriminating on the basis of sex, but exempted ‘[r]estrooms, shower rooms, bathhouses, and similar facilities which are in their nature distinctly private.’

“Adding the new categories of ‘sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression’ to the second part of the public accommodations ordinance would not have suited the objectives of radical activists to overhaul existing bathroom policy. Therefore, City Council eliminated the second part of the ordinance completely, including its bathroom and shower exemptions.

“They moved ‘sex’ to the first part and added the new classifications. So, the new language is just this:

“‘It shall be unlawful to deny any person the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, and accommodations of a place of public accommodation because of race, color, religion, sex, familial status, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or national origin.’

“‘This is a boneheaded blunder and a further embarrassment to Charlotte.'”

“If ‘gender identity’ and ‘gender expression’ mean that a transgender must be allowed to use the bathroom and shower of choice, then ‘sex’ means that ALL men must be permitted to use women’s facilities and vice versa. The City Attorney says that’s not what was intended, but it is what the language says.”

But it’s only the eeevil “Reich wing” religious nutballs who have a problem with this, right?

     Nope.

The crew who film the show “Transparent” about the live of “trans-people” are up in arms over “trans-friendly” toilets:

“The beef is that men, women and transgenders can all enter as they please, making it uncomfortable for some of the crew. Women are particularly worried about walking in and seeing a dude peeing at the urinal. Now this is interesting … we’re told several crew members are too scared to complain, for fear they’ll be labeled ‘transphobic,’ which would be the kiss of death on that set.”

Remind me again who has power and privilege?

But… but… attacks on children would never really happen, right?

     Wrong:

“Seattle Parks and Recreation has confirmed an adult male inappropriately used a female locker room at Evans Pool in Green Lake while a youth swim team used the facilities”
