But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security. Such has been the patient Sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the Necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The History of the present King of Great- Britain is a History of repeated Injuries and Usurpations, all having in direct Object the Establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. Magna Carta And The Birth Of The Rule Of Law

     The original Magna Carta, signed by the Barons and King John at Runnymede, celebrated it’s 800th birthday ten years ago. Along with the Charter of the Forest, they became the foundational documents of the Anglosphere and of American reverence for the Rule of Law.   It still serves a central role as one of the pillars of American law, and indeed the very fabric of our society.

“Constitutions are seldom self-reinforcing in the very long run. The Roman Republic was the longest lasting and most successful regime in antiquity. But its numerous devices for preventing one-man rule eventually could not stop Julius Caesar and Gaius Octavianus. A similar account applies to the institutions of medieval city-states such as Florence and Venice.

“Similarly, the institutions that supported democracy and the rule of law in the 20th century may need to be reworked to meet the challenges of the 21st. In order to inspire the American Revolutionaries in the 18th century, Magna Carta had to be revived and reinterpreted in the 17th century by English Parliamentarians. The preservation of the rule of law may require similar acts of imagination and courage. If we do need to reinvigorate or reform our own institutions, we should not neglect critical episodes in English history such as the background to the Magna Carta in the 13th century and to the conflicts between crown and Parliament in the 17th century for guidance.

“There have been countless oppressive rulers throughout history. What distinguishes the barons of 1215 is that they coalesced around general principles (as well as some specific demands). Rather than replacing a bad ruler with ‘their guy’, they had thought deeply about the roots of the crisis they found themselves in. Our present moment may require a similar level of reflection.”

     However, the definitive version was that signed by King John’s son, Henry III, was adopted 800 years ago this year. And it is that version that became the foundational document of the English Speaking Peoples.

Redefining Terms And Natural Law

     Many a year a go, an intelligent and well read Catholic school teacher, who was politically Left-wing, said to me that “Social Justice” meant no more than the concepts that Thomas Aquinas discussed and anyone who had a problem with “Social Justice” was dissing the Western world’s Christian heritage. This is a cute little Motte & Bailey fallacy, the use of which is not limited to one purported political wing and not another. The question of “Natural Law” is also under attach using the same fallacy, as is hereinunder discussed, quoted in full below due to the limitations of Twitter/X embeds.*

The term “Natural Law” has been hijacked and repurposed by esoteric, occult, and Hermetic traditions in ways that profoundly distort its classical meaning. Many well-meaning people today are confused because they hear the same words (“Natural Law”) but they are being used to mean entirely opposite things, with opposite consequences for truth, morality, liberty and personhood. Let’s perform a scalpel-precise forensic distinction between:

Classical Natural Law (Aristotle → Aquinas)

vs.

Hermetic “Natural Law” (Gnostic / Occult / Esoteric)

Firing Line Friday: Women against Pornography

     In the hopes of encouraging a more civil, and illuminating, discourse, here is another episode of William F. Buckley, Jr.’s “Firing Line”.

     Censorship and moral outrage seems to be in perpetual conflict with the 1st Amendment.   As true as that is today, it was even more highly debated 40 years ago when William F. Buckley, Jr. invited Andrea Dworkin and Harriet F. Pilpel to debate the question of women against pornography.

The Trump Tram Ride

     What is MAGA?   It is whatever President Trump says it is. But that hasn’t stopped people from claiming to represent the true intellectual base of MAGA, and use the coincidence of policy, and performative loyalty, with Trump as a shield against political backlash.   Such antic have allowed many fringe views and people, including grifters and crazies, to worm themselves into positions of power. Some of them were so assured of themselves that they could will their preferred policy into existence… or even steal the MAGA base from Trump.

     They were mistaken.

     It turns out that the neo-isolationist “Right”, who not only knew but approved the original “America First” politics of the late ‘30s and early ‘40s, are not in control of Trump, MAGA, or the Republican Party. These “populists” turned out to be not-so-popular.

     The widespread support of the Iranian nuke site bombings ordered by Trump within the GOP and MAGA more specifically has knocked many of these blame America first demagogues off of their high horses.

     Their secret to power was the fulsom ability of sycophancy—providing not just high praise but honeyed words. They are the Wormtonque to Trump’s Theodan. For a lot of the power hungry grifters on the Right, Trump is the tool they use to gain and keep power.

     Trump is their beard.

     They are hoping to so institutionalize themselves that when Trump is gone, their positions will have become fortified. To do this, they treat Trump as a tram ride to power and a means to implement their vision.

     Cyborgs and and the silly belief in “transhumanism” is, according to some, “a new attempt at the age-old ploy to steal the human soul”.

“[Transhumanism is] a merging of human and machine, in other words, and while it sounds like dystopian fiction, the concept is entirely real, and it’s happening right now.

“We don’t have cyborgs yet, but given the fact that transhumanism has snaked its way into the reproductive world, which is booming today thanks to America’s fertility crisis, it’s likely only a matter of time before they walk among us.

“[One even] points to transhumanist companies that are currently manufacturing human eggs in a lab ‘without any input from a female ovary’ and then fertilizing them with either ‘real sperm or synthetic sperm, which can also be grown.’ In other words, pseudo-human beings are being created by machines in laboratories.

“Trying to stop this, she says, is ‘impossible’ — as is halting the development of organoids or the implantation of brain chips.”

     This is good news if the technology is used to create genetically engineered cyborg catgirls for domestic adoption.

False Consciousness & Repressive Tolerance

     When some on the purported Right say they will “fight like the Left”, this is why they mean, as James Lindsay notes, quoted in full full below due to the limitations of Twitter/X embeds.

Neomarxist Herbert Marcuse, from “Repressive Tolerance,” 1965:

“Withdrawal of tolerance from regressive movements before they can become active; intolerance even toward thought, opinion, and word, and finally, intolerance in the opposite direction, that is, toward the self-styled conservatives, to the political Right—these anti-democratic notions respond to the actual development of the democratic society which has destroyed the basis for universal tolerance. The conditions under which tolerance can again become a liberating and humanizing force have still to be created. When tolerance mainly serves the protection and preservation of a repressive society, when it serves to neutralize opposition and to render men immune against other and better forms of life, then tolerance has been perverted. And when this perversion starts in the mind of the individual, in his consciousness, his needs, when heteronomous interests occupy him before he can experience his servitude, then the efforts to counteract his dehumanization must begin at the place of entrance, there where the false consciousness takes form (or rather: is systematically formed)—it must begin with stopping the words and images which feed this consciousness. To be sure, this is censorship, even precensorship, but openly directed against the more or less hidden censorship that permeates the free media. Thus, the break through the false consciousness may provide the Archimedean point for a larger emancipation—at an infinitesimally small spot, to be sure, but it is on the enlargement of such small spots that the chance of change depends.”

To see what the Woke Right is doing against Daily Wire, just reverse the directions Right and Left there, realize they consider DW as producing liberal false consciousness in a conservative garb that they ultimately want to censor so the average conservative won’t be fed those words and images, and that Matt represents a point at which they believe they can break through the false consciousness peddled by DW.

Matt Walsh is the Archimedean point upon which they believe they can leverage Daily Wire off the table.
