Quick Takes – Standing Up To Euthanasia: Catholic Bishops; J. K. Rowling; Montana

Another “quick takes” on items where there is too little to say to make a complete article, but is still important enough to comment on.

The focus this time: Born to die; live to win.

     First, a little mood music:

Death, Rx

Catholic Bishops have openly stood up against a pro-euthanasia bill introduced in Illinois, SB9:

“Catholic bishops across Illinois are urging the faithful to act quickly as a bill that would legalize assisted suicide could soon be sent to the state Senate for a vote.

“The Catholic Conference of Illinois, the public policy voice of the state’s bishops, issued a strong statement urging Catholics to contact their state senators and voice opposition, warning that the bill, Senate Bill 9, threatens the sanctity of human life.

“‘[L]egalizing assisted suicide goes against the Church’s teachings on the sanctity and dignity of human life,’ the bishops said. ‘It undermines the value of each human person, particularly those who are vulnerable.’”

The bill status as of posting is “ Re-referred to Assignments”.

From the scourge of Born-Again Christians to a voice against Transgender Ideology, J.K. Rowling has surprised again by coming out again the legalization of assisted suicide.

“Author J.K. Rowling has announced she no longer supports the legalization of assisted suicide, citing concerns about the risks of coercion and the message such laws send to vulnerable people.

“Her comments come as the U.K.’s House of Lords debates the Assisted Dying Bill, which would allow terminally ill adults in England and Wales to request physician-assisted death under limited conditions.

“‘I used to believe in assisted dying,’ Rowling wrote in a post on X. ‘I no longer do, largely because I’m married to a doctor who opened my eyes to the possibilities of coercion of sick or vulnerable people.’

“Her husband, Dr. Neil Murray, is a practicing physician who she says helped her understand the potential dangers.

“Rowling first privately raised doubts about the practice last year but has become more vocal in recent weeks, reposting statements from others opposed to the measure, according to Christian Action Research and Education (CARE).”

Montana has outlawed physician-assisted suicide, with the passage of SB 136.

“Pro-assisted-suicide activists like to say the unethical act it is legal in Montana. Strictly speaking, that isn’t true. Some years ago, a muddled Montana supreme court ruling refused to create a state constitutional right to assisted suicide as requested by activists because the Montana constitution’s legislative history made it clear that the court couldn’t. But wanting to legalize it anyway, the judges declared somehow that assisted suicide wasn’t against public policy of the state and that consent to such an act was a defense to a criminal charge.

“Montana has been in that muddled legal state ever since, with attempts to either explicitly legalize or criminalize assisted suicide unable to get to the governor’s desk.”

The bill was signed by the Governor into law.
