Glenn Shiroma was convicted of a misdemeanor assault in 1992. According to Hawaii law, someone similarly situated would be eligible for firearm ownership as long as 20 years without incident have passed since the offense, but in 2023, Shiroma applied for a PTA and was denied. In May 2025 Shiroma filed a federal complaint against the County of Hawaii. On September 9, a stipulated judgment and injunction were ordered in Shiroma’s favor.

Yet Another New Jersey City Joins Ranks of Those Refunding Excessive Fees
For a state so closely associated with the mafia in the popular culture, you’d think that New Jersey would recognize that criminals can get guns no matter what you do, and that there’s no reason to punish the law-abiding for that fact.

The “nature rights” movement is pushing environmentalism into the unscientific realm. Specifically, the movement promotes a neo-pagan mysticism — such as invoking Pachamama the Incan earth goddess — as a major basis for its advocacy.

Nuclear In Your Backyard? Tiny Reactors Could One Day Power Towns And Campuses

Rep. Mark Amodei’s (R-NV) office spoke with the U.S. Energy Secretary on Friday following news that a key loan for the mining project is in jeopardy.

‘Rights’ for Planets and Space Microbes
If everything has rights — trees, geological features, animals, waves (yes, waves!) — then the core principle protecting human liberty becomes as worthless as currency during a wild inflation. Now, illustrating the Luddite sensibilities that permeate environmentalism generally and the nature rights movement specifically, a science journal has published advocacy by three astrobiology “ethicists” urging that planets, moons, and even space microbes be granted rights.

MAHA and ‘Biodynamic’ Agriculture
America’s farmers, who have not been in the best of shape financially, are now having to contend with the effect of retaliatory tariffs on their exports. A bailout is reportedly coming sooner or later.

J. K. Rowling Comes Out Against Legalizing Assisted Suicide
I have always believed that liberals should be leading opponents of assisted suicide. After all, two of the core tenets of liberalism are (supposed to be) protecting vulnerable people from exploitation and promoting equality among all people. But other than disability-rights activists, most liberals tend to support legalization based on “choice.”

Joint Elderly Assisted Suicide in Switzerland to Avoid Future Widowhood
Once we decide that killing is an acceptable answer to suffering, the kind of suffering that qualifies us to be made dead continually expands. Now, an elderly British couple have committed joint assisted suicide at a Swiss termination clinic to avoid future widowhood and increasing fragility — in other words, to eliminate future suffering.

Russia: Testing the Boundaries
Russia’s testing of NATO’s defenses has been going on for a long while, and so, in that sense, the recent mass “incursion” of its drones into Poland hardly came out of the blue. At the same time, it was clearly an escalation, probably designed to test both NATO’s political and military response.

The Comey Perjury Count the Grand Jury Refused to Charge
This morning, we published my column arguing that the perjury and obstruction case against former FBI Director James Comey should be dismissed because there is no factual basis for the allegation that Comey lied when he denied authorizing his then-deputy, Andrew McCabe, to leak investigative information to the Wall Street Journal. (Contrary to the assertion of Senator Ted Cruz (R., Texas) in the question he put to Comey at a Senate hearing, McCabe, who has admitted orchestrating the leak, never claimed that Comey authorized him to do so — he claims to have told Comey about it after the fact.)

Recent Events Highlight Need for Objective Monetary Policy
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) met last week and decided to lower the target for the federal funds rate (FFR), the policy rate used to affect economy-wide changes, by 25 basis points, as was widely expected. Recent developments, especially Stephen Miran’s appointment and subsequent dissent at the FOMC meeting, have again triggered concerns over Fed independence and the degree to which rate decisions are influenced by the president. But the Fed (and Congress) must bear some responsibility for allowing monetary policy to become increasingly discretionary. Presently, the FOMC can set its policy rate target based on members’ subjective opinions, making it difficult to know precisely how this target is chosen. The Fed should follow, or be mandated to follow, an objective monetary policy rule to both improve rate decisions and shield its independence from the executive.

Opinion

The gospel according to Tucker
I have faithfully followed Tucker Carlson’s descent into the gutter of vile anti-Semitism. The documentation can be found in an admittedly tiresome series of posts here. In my opinion, every writer, public figure, every publication, and every institution that lauded him in years past is obligated to speak out against the figure he has become — deceitful and destructive in his own right and a discredit to everyone with whom he associates.

Pull the Plug on the Federal Communications Commission
In both 2013 and 2024, I made the shorthand observation that spending restraint is a good default answer for any question about fiscal policy. Today, I’m going to expand upon that hypothesis by introducing by 22th Theorem of Government. Simply stated, you won’t be wrong very often if your knee-jerk response to any controversy is to think about making government smaller.

How Not to Help Israel
Israel is a source of Western values. It is an important partner in intelligence gathering and in military technological development. We have many American citizens who love Israel and have relations there. You could even argue the way Douglas Murray does now that Israel is a kind of rampart of our civilization, defending it from attack and modeling resistance to the demographic and political tides that roll against us. All of that would make a lot more sense.

Chaos Reigns, by Design
If it seems like we’re alternating between the important news of the week and “whatever Donald Trump wishes us to talk about,” in recent performances, then understand that technically speaking I am a mere carnival barker and don’t control the schedules around here: Donald Trump, America’s self-designated Ringmaster of Events, calls the tune — and the rest of us either dance to it, sway along to the beat, or sit frozen in our seats with dismay as we take notes. As it turns out, I’m no good at dancing, and my natural sense of rhythm doesn’t match the current meter. Which leaves me with only one option.

The Constitution and its enemies
The title of this piece pays homage to Karl Popper’s great work of political philosophy, “The Open Society and Its Enemies.” Popper wrote the book during the Second World War in an attempt to explain — and refute — the totalitarian ideologies that had delivered Europe into the hands of murderous dictators like Stalin and Hitler.

Where Is Your ‘Stochastic Terrorism’ Now, Media?
America’s civic disintegration continues apace as terrible news comes out of Dallas: This morning an ICE facility was attacked by a gunman — identified by authorities as Joshua Jahn, age 29 — who unloaded a rifle into a van carrying detainees, then took his own life. The shooter, by the markings on the shell casings he left, declared his motive quite literally as being “ANTI-ICE,” but all of his victims — shot while still in their seats, from a distance — were in fact detainees being transported to the facility for processing. One has died.

Yuval Levin’s Excellent Reflections on the Constitution
My friend Yuval Levin’s American Covenant: How the Constitution Unified Our Nation—And Could Again is a rich and brilliant reflection on the Constitution—not just as a legal framework but also as “an institutional framework; a policymaking framework; a political framework in the highest sense of the political; and, finally, a framework for union and for solidarity.” It has wise and insightful chapters on Congress, the presidency, the courts, and federalism.

What’s Wrong with the Jim Comey Prosecution
The prosecution of Jim Comey is political — unavoidably so. That alone doesn’t make it bad; political cases have always been with us, and Comey has been at the center of decisions to bring them (or not bring them) many times. Comey is a political figure under fire for political statements, so not prosecuting him would also have been political.
