Quick Takes – Academic Madness: Racist Picnics; Woke Medicine; Black Is The New Gender

Another “quick takes” on items where there is too little to say to make a complete article, but is still important enough to comment on.

The focus this time: Maybe it’s time we should retake the asylums from the inmates?

     First, a little mood music:

     Carrying on…

Even if something isn’t racist, it’s still racist, at least at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

“A scheduled ‘picnic’ sponsored by the University of Nevada Las Vegas law school’s Environmental Law Society has been renamed ‘Lunch by the Lake’ due to ‘diversity and inclusion’ concerns.

“According to a memo obtained by Libs of TikTok, the law group informed members that the word ‘picnic’ has “historical and offensive connotations,” and apologized for ‘any harm or discomfort’ caused by its use.

“The group’s view mirrors that of the University of Michigan’s IT department from several years ago: ‘Picnic’ was included in a ‘Words Matter Task Force’s’ list of offensive words and phrases along with ‘brown bag,’ ‘blacklist’ and ‘long time, no see’ among others.

“At the time, Reuters did a fact check on the alleged offensiveness of ‘picnic’; its verdict: It ‘does not originate from racist lynchings’ but instead comes from the 300-plus-year-old French word ‘pique-nique,’ meaning a potluck-like social gathering.”

Most medical schools have gone full woke.

“The ‘racialization of medical education’ has created a ‘national emergency’ because many of America’s future doctors are being inundated with critical race theory (CRT) and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), according to the founder of CriticalRace.org.

“CriticalRace.org, which monitors CRT curricula and training in higher education, has expanded its Medical School Database to include all 155 accredited U.S. medical schools. Findings revealed a staggering 70 percent provide mandatory or voluntary CRT-related coursework or training for students.

“‘The extent to which CRT/DEI and related programming has worked its way into medical schools is truly shocking and worrisome. Racial and other activism should not be the focus of medical education,’ William Jacobson told Fox News Digital….

“‘The ideological capture of over two-thirds of medical schools demonstrates that CRT/DEI has become a part of the fabric of medical education. We are training future doctors to look at patients through a racial lens, with potentially frightening consequences for society,’ Jacobson said.

“‘It’s often said that collapse happens slowly, and then very suddenly. Medical school education is slowly collapsing, but it’s not too late,’ he continued. ‘We need to stop the CRT/DEI medical agenda before that collapse becomes irreversible.’ ….”

Being Black isn’t about race, but moral purity now…

“A textbook used in a Texas State University English class contains multiple essays related to ideologies and theories associated with the left.

“The textbook, ‘Emerging: Contemporary Readings for Writers’ (Fifth Edition) by Barclay Barrios contains a collection of essays that are mostly focused on left wing-associated causes and subjects, and seemingly only one essay that focuses on conservative-leaning principles. The textbook is being taught to students at the English 1310: College Writing course at Texas State.

“The syllabus describes the class as an ‘expository writing’ course, and states: ‘You will study the principles of effective composition, with emphasis on the improvement of your own texts through revision and the critical reading of substantive nonfiction texts. While self-expressive and narrative writing may serve as a means of supporting ideas within a given paper, such writing is not, in itself, the focus of the course.’

“‘Blackness ruptures the laws of gender just like the laws of the state seem intent on rupturing Black life. My gender is Black,’ reads an excerpt from an essay titled ‘My Gender Is Black’ by Hari Ziyad.

“The essay argues that ‘Blackness is not a race . . . Blackness is that which is denied access to humanity, and thus Blackness is denied access to human gender/sexuality identities,’ that ‘[g]ender identity under whiteness is a tool, not an end,’ and that ‘none of us Black folk can ‘conform’ to manhood and womanhood as those constructs have been formed.’”
