Nuclear Overreactors
Let's cool the political meltdown over Japan's damaged nuclear power plants.
By William Saletan
Quake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in Futaba, Japan
Less than a year ago, a drilling rig exploded off the coast of the United States, killing 11 workers and pouring 4 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. No natural disaster caused this tragedy. It was entirely man-made. President Obama halted deep-water drilling but lifted the moratorium less than six months later. On Friday, while fielding questions about Japan's nuclear reactors, he proudly noted that his administration, under new, stricter rules, had "approved more than 35 new offshore drilling permits."

5 oil refineries in Japan are shutdown and two of them are on fire.
At least five refineries, with a combined oil-processing capacity of 1.2 million barrels a day, shut down automatically when they sensed the earthquake. Nuclear Overreactions
Modern life requires learning from disasters, not fleeing all risk.
After a once-in-300-years earthquake, the Japanese have been keeping cool amid the chaos, organizing an enormous relief and rescue operation, and generally earning the world's admiration. Union mobocracy drowns out democracy in Wisconsin
By: Examiner Editorial
Democracy could be found in Wisconsin this past week, but not among the screaming protesters running wild throughout the Wisconsin capitol. While Wisconsin's elected representatives -- minus 14 Democratic state senators who fled the state -- were working hard on the job the people sent them to do, thousands of screaming protesters provided America with a preview of the union mobocracy coming soon to a legislature, city council or school board near you. State, county and city governments across the country might well find themselves facing the same confrontational tactics that caused havoc in Wisconsin.

Mandatory Spending to Exceed all Federal Revenues — 50 Years Ahead of Schedule

By JEFFREY H. ANDERSON
We have now gotten to the point — as I noted yesterday — where if national defense, interstate highways, national parks, homeland security, and all other discretionary programs somehow became absolutely free, we’d still have a budget deficit. The White House Office of Management and Budget projects that in the current fiscal year (2011), mandatory spending alone will exceed all federal receipts. So even if we didn’t spend a single cent on discretionary programs, we still wouldn’t be able to balance our budget this year — let alone pay off any of the $14 trillion in debt that we have already accumulated.
